The prominent Santa Maria is the oldest active church in Alicante. It was built in between the 13th and 14th century, over the remains of a Mosque. The church is built in a baroque facade with a single nave. Six wide chapels are located in between the buttresses. The church was promoted to the status of Basilica in 2007.
The church has been frequently rebuilt and features a mix of various architectural styles. The church features two asymmetrical towers. The statue of Virgin Mary stands over the doorway. The splendour, opulence and grandeur of the church feel palpable.
Times are on display at the church while mass is still celebrated. Items dated from the 14th and 15th century can be found in the church.
